Emerging spots: Start your Kerala monsoon tour with Palakkad’s 'vattakinar'

An enchanting, circular pool with crystal clear blue water in the middle of vast expanses of green paddy fields. You’ve probably seen reels where excited swimmers dive into its waters as drones capture sweeping views of both the circular well and the lush fields around it. If you are preparing this year's Kerala monsoon trail list, the 'vattakinar' in Palakkad's Kumaranellur can be a great season opener. Former block member of the area, Noorul Ameen, says, "The pond is many years old and was dug to supply water for cultivation. However, its outer ring was constructed just about 8 years ago. It's only been about two or three years since the spot started gaining recognition as a place of tourism interest." 

What to see
An 11-metre-diameter well-like pond with around 10 feet of water right in the middle of the 10-plus hectare Kumaranellur Thazhepadam paddy field is what you get to see here. A great spot to enjoy the quintessential Palakkad beauty in its raw form, the vattakinar and its surroundings are best enjoyed in the early mornings and late afternoons, according to local people. "The field is at its lushest green in the monsoon months of June and July," says Ameen. 

Activity possibilities
If you love swimming, you can dive in and swim across the length and breadth of the pond. Many also love to sit on the outer ring of the pond and enjoy the evening breeze and amazing view. If you aren't too keen to explore the waters, take a walk around the beautiful field, and that's all you need for the day's dose of relaxation. 

Attractions nearby
It's just a few kilometres from the Kuttippuram Nila Park, a riverside spot alongside the Bharathapuzha River known for its landscaped gardens and cultural events.  The Velliyankallu check dam and park, a popular picnic spot, is a destination that can be clubbed with a visit to the 'vattakinar.' 

How to reach
Kumaranellur is just about 5 km from Edappal in Malappuram. Go around a kilometre on the Kumaranellur Padam Road to reach 'vattakinar,' on the Kumaranelloor Thazhepadam paddy field.
